In my studies, I have come across an interesting comparison. I have come to believe that the universe is a reflection of itself in all ways. This is such a way that a diagram of an atom is similar to a diagram of our solar system. In as much as an atom is a part of a molecule, a solar system is part of galaxy. This can be extrapolated that we are living inside a greater being, and we are analogous to a quark or dark existing within this greater being’s structure.
With this simple analogy in mind, I give you the Hamr and Urdh. Respectively, one is a function of an individual; the other is a function of “the world”. The Hamr is what defines the shape of one’s body; the Urdhr defines the shape of one’s fate.
The Hamr is only one portion of a person’s soul complex. It is the prototypical form in which the Lik (body) grows into. Those, whose minds are disciplined, can focus their Hugr (will) to modify the shape of the Hamr. As the Hamr changes, by degrees, the Lik follows suit. Thus we have the basis for Hamramr (shape shifting).
Now let’s shift our focus and perception to a grander scale. Our reality is made up of at least two realities, the subjective and objective. It is the dynamic effect of the give and take of these two levels of reality that the internal reality of the self is actualized. Dynamic because not only are we the product of the reality around us, but also the reality around us is the product of the individual. Again, we have a reflection in the universe.
If reality is a product of the individual, how does one go about modifying reality? The process of modifying reality is the same process as Hamramr. I have found that the objective reality is modifiable by the focus of the will. In essence, using the runes (or other methodologies) to alter one’s thinking and belief, then the perceived reality in the objective universe also changes.
What I mean is simply this. Modify perceived reality in the subjective universe so that the intended event has just successfully been completed. Then, the reality perceived in the objective universe will follow suit, step by step. Such as faring on a journey; you must see yourself safely completing your journey. This alteration in subjective reality makes it so that it is perceived that you have already arrived safe and sound. This modification of subjective reality (outside any and all temporal perceptions) acts as the Hamr to the Lik. Every step of your journey is now layered in safety, because the prototypical form of the outcome of your journey has already been rought.
It is now my preposterous suggestion that this is the exact process used by the Norns and Disir. It is written in lore that the Norns rist runes of fate. By removing the stave forms, tangible meanings and names of the runes we find them as powerful tools for modification of the objective and subjective reality. I consider them tools, because the runes give our individual wills an exact focus on the exact subject for the exact result (in essence a bind-rune without form, but with relevance). Once the subjective reality has been modified, then the objective reality will then follow suit; just as the Lik fills in the form dictated by the Hamr.
